This bench was designed by Hector Guimard one of the leaders of the Art Nouveau movement, illustrated here by the lively design of this asymmetrical bench, one leg of which seems to be a trunk sprouting supple branches that curve like vines. This original, almost outlandish, piece of furniture, was designed to be placed in the corner of a room, as is shown by the small display case which seems to be suspended in the air beneath a roof-like shelf. The Ant chair was named for its approximate similarity to the outline of an ant with its head raised. The chair was designed to be light, stable, easy to stack up, and to minimize tangling the user's feet. The original model had three plastic legs and a seat made from form-moulded laminated veneer; although the plastic in the legs was replaced by tubular steel, and a version with four legs was also made. Originally painted white, Mackintosh's high, narrow Hill House chair was meant to be decorative - not to be actually sat on. The elegant Ladder Back chair is extremely delicate with it's sole purpose decoration. The slender back legs are elliptical in shape with a series of ladder rails linking them together.
